Soiling Measurement System

Soiling—the accumulation of dust, dirt, pollen, and other contaminants on photovoltaic (PV) modules—reduces energy generation in PV power plants. Average annual losses range from 1–6%, varying by site conditions. Accurate monitoring is essential, especially in utility-scale plants under performance guarantees. Soiling Monitoring Systems (SMS) measure losses using two co-planar PV reference modules: one kept clean by automated washing, and the other left to accumulate soiling. By comparing the current and maximum power output of both modules—adjusted for temperature—operators determine the soiling ratio (SR), which indicates the performance impact of soiling in real time and helps optimize maintenance scheduling.
